Hello there, lovely person! Did you miss me?
Sooooo…. I dunno if you noticed, but I kinda fell off the planet a bit these past few months. Well, off the blogging wagon, anyway. Sorry about that.
Long story short, I essentially bit off far more than I could chew (as usual), got completely overwhelmed (as usual) and tried to run away from everything and do anything other than what I should be doing (as usual). I wrote a book, took a few trips and spent quite a bit of time designing printable pages for personal organisers.
I knew all that stuff wasn’t going to help my little business grow, but I had no idea what I should have been doing instead! So I bumbled around for a while, not making any progress and just feeling a bit stuck, if truth be told.
After a while, I started to miss working on my business. I’d really only been working on orders and had let all the other things slide, because I just didn’t see that they were actually very beneficial. I was busy doing, but what I was doing wasn’t getting my anywhere!
So, eventually I made the decision to take a step back and review what I’d been doing as if it was someone else’s business.
I was brutal. I stripped back all the unnecessary noise I’d created, pared down my voluminous collection of about 50 handmade designs to 14, got rid of all the equipment I’d accumulated but was no longer using (hello, eBay, my old friend), started working on some digital designs to sell on my Etsy and Zazzle stores and created some new workflow systems that will help me work more efficiently.
All of which ultimately will enable me to help more lovely couples with their wedding stationery, which is the name of the game 🙂
Is everything perfect now? Absolutely not. It probably never will be. It is, however, about a million times more manageable now than it was a year ago, and I’m feeling much better about it all- as I’m sure you can tell by the fact I’m blogging again!
I actually started to miss blogging and writing newsletters, the first two things that got cut in the business reshuffle. They’d been feeling like a millstone around my neck, an obligation, a chore.
Once I took the time to think about why I was actually doing these things, I realised that I was doing them simply because I felt like I ought to. Everyone else was blogging and sending newsletters and saying how great it was, so I thought I should be too!
But that’s the wrong reason for doing anything, right? Who cares if everyone else is doing something, if you have no real understanding of why you’re doing it then it’s a complete waste of time and energy! I mean, hopefully what I’d been writing was of some use and/or interest, but because I wasn’t doing it because I actually wanted to do it, it wasn’t my best work. To be honest, I was quite surprised to log in here after almost a year of inactivity to find that I was still getting a few views every month- maybe what I was putting out wasn’t too bad after all!
It could be better, though.
I want it to be better. More useful. More… well, more ‘me’, really.
Looking back at how I was writing, I was definitely trying to be something I’m not. I can’t really explain it, but it just feels very formal and a bit clinical- two things I’m certainly not!
I think I’d got it into my head that that’s how a wedding professional should be, very to-the-point and slightly aloof. Which is fine, if that’s how you are… but it’s not me, and it feels very fake. Like I’m writing an essay, rather than talking to a bride or groom.
Which is no fun to write, and probably not much fun to read, either!
So, out with the straight-laced approach to writing and in with the ‘having a chat over a coffee’ vibe instead. It feels better to me, and I hope it feels more authentic to read.
So, I hereby commit to only writing in my own style 🙂 I’ll be sharing a mixture of tips about wedding stationery, style inspiration and short interviews with other wedding suppliers. I’ll also be doing product highlights on my own products to share some information about the different types of wedding stationery that are available.
I also promise to write more succinct blog posts, as I know I can be a little wordy. And to publish at least once a week- though I haven’t settled on a day/time yet, so my publishing schedule will be a little erratic for a while as I work out the best time to release my words into the world.
Just so you know, I’m also going to be using some affiliate links (like this one to my Zazzle store), because unfortunately those bills won’t pay themselves and I feel a little guilty about blogging if it can’t directly make any money when it’s taking me away from other work.* But, I’ll only be sharing things I’ve created or I like and have checked they have decent reviews – I won’t be recommending any old tat!
And if you have a question you’d like me to answer, please leave it in the comments and I’ll do my best to help 🙂
Have a fabulous day 🙂

*Unless you’ve found a legal and morally sound way to make the bills pay themselves, in which case please share in the comments, as that sounds amazing and I’m sure we’d all be very interested to hear about your methods, o wise one.
